The incident later motivated lawmakers to allocate funds for Marine Corps leaders to "battle misogyny within the ranks," and, in May 2017, the secret sharing of explicit photos became a crime under military law. The name of the Facebook group in question refers to another group, Marines United, which had been investigated last year for sharing nude photos of female service members and veterans. Vice added that neither Facebook nor Dropbox responded to requests for comment.

On Tuesday, March 6, the group was shut down by Facebook after Marine Corps veteran Erin Kirk Cuomo alerted the social media platform to its existence. Vice News noted that the link allegedly made its initial appearance last month on a Facebook group called Blame Marines United (Non-Butthurt Edition), which is reportedly open only to men.
